About this unit
Seed is the most basic input in farming: good seed alone can raise yields noticeably. This unit covers the structure of monocot and dicot seeds, how crop plants reproduce (sexual and asexual), pollination and fertilisation, and seed dormancy and the classes of seed used in India's seed multiplication chain. It connects directly with plant breeding, seed treatment and sowing practices.
How to prepare
Draw and label a gram (dicot) seed and a maize grain (monocot). Learn the products of double fertilisation and their ploidy. List the devices that promote cross-pollination with crop examples. Memorise the causes of dormancy with matching treatments, and the order nucleus → breeder → foundation → certified seed with tag colours.
