Work, Livelihood and Career
Unit I. Covers Work, age and gender; Occupational heritage of India; Career options; Entrepreneurship and self-employment; Life skills for career building.
About this unit
This unit looks at work as a part of human life: why people work, how age and gender shape the kind of work people do, the rich occupational traditions of India, and the many careers and enterprises that grow out of Home Science. It connects the subject to the real world of jobs and livelihoods and helps you think about your own future path.
Key ideas
- Work can be paid or unpaid; household and care work is real work even when it earns no wage.
- Age and gender influence the type of work assigned to people, often through social norms and stereotypes.
- India has a long heritage of hereditary crafts, textiles and skills passed down through families and communities.
- Home Science opens careers in nutrition, child development, textiles, resource management and communication.
- Entrepreneurship and self-employment let people create their own livelihood and jobs for others.
- Life skills such as communication, decision-making and time management support success at work.
How to prepare
- Make a list of crafts with the states they are linked to; matching-type questions are common.
