Why grammar matters in NCET

Grammar is not listed as a separate unit, but it sits behind “choosing the correct word”, “rearranging the parts” and sentence-level questions. A student who knows how Italian sentences are built can spot the right answer quickly.

What to revise

  • Parts of speech and how each behaves in a sentence.
  • Agreement between subject and verb, and between nouns and their adjectives where Italian requires it.
  • Tense and aspect, and keeping them consistent across a sentence.
  • Active and passive forms.
  • Simple, compound and complex sentences, and the words that join clauses.

How to practise

Take ten sentences from a Italian newspaper. For each, find the subject, the verb and the object, and say why the verb has the form it does.
