The essentials

Sanskrit literature has two broad phases. Vedic literature includes the four Vedas — ऋग्वेदः, यजुर्वेदः, सामवेदः, अथर्ववेदः — each with संहिता, ब्राह्मण, आरण्यक and उपनिषद् texts. Six वेदाङ्गानि help in understanding the Vedas: शिक्षा, कल्पः, व्याकरणम्, निरुक्तम्, छन्दः, ज्योतिषम्. Classical (laukika) literature begins with the epics and continues through the Purāṇas, poetry, prose and drama.

Key points

  • ऋग्वेदः is the oldest Veda and has 10 मण्डलानि. सामवेदः is closely linked with music.
  • रामायणम् by वाल्मीकिः is called the आदिकाव्यम् (first poem), and Vālmīki the आदिकविः. It has seven काण्डानि, from बालकाण्डम् to उत्तरकाण्डम्.
  • महाभारतम् by वेदव्यासः has 18 पर्वाणि and about one lakh verses (शतसाहस्री संहिता). The श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, with 18 chapters and 700 verses, is part of its भीष्मपर्व.
  • पुराणानि are traditionally 18 (महापुराणानि); their five subjects (पञ्चलक्षणम्) are सर्गः, प्रतिसर्गः, वंशः, मन्वन्तराणि, वंशानुचरितम्.
  • भासः: thirteen plays rediscovered in the early 20th century, including स्वप्नवासवदत्तम्.
  • बाणभट्टः: court poet of Harṣavardhana; कादम्बरी and हर्षचरितम्. The saying "बाणोच्छिष्टं जगत्सर्वम्" praises his range.
  • बृहत्त्रयी: किरातार्जुनीयम् (भारविः), शिशुपालवधम् (माघः), नैषधीयचरितम् (श्रीहर्षः).
  • Other works: गीतगोविन्दम् (जयदेवः), नीतिशतकम् (भर्तृहरिः), उत्तररामचरितम् (भवभूतिः), मृच्छकटिकम् (शूद्रकः).
  • A famous verse sums up poets: उपमा कालिदासस्य, भारवेरर्थगौरवम्, दण्डिनः पदलालित्यम्, माघे सन्ति त्रयो गुणाः.

Exam tips

  • Make an author–work table and test yourself both ways.
  • Remember numbers: 4 Vedas, 6 Vedāṅgas, 7 kāṇḍas, 18 parvas, 18 Purāṇas.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the Mahābhārata the आदिकाव्यम्; that title belongs to the Rāmāyaṇa.
