Values and the guru-shishya parampara
Values and morals from the Indian tradition.
The guru-shishya tradition
In the Indian tradition the guru is a guide to knowledge and character, and the relationship rests on respect, trust and dedication. Values emphasised include truthfulness (satya), non-violence (ahimsa), self-discipline, service and humility. Texts such as the Taittiriya Upanishad ask the departing student to “speak the truth” and “practise dharma”.
Today
NEP 2020 aims to restore high respect for teachers and the teaching profession, while modern teaching is democratic and learner-centred.
