Teaching Aptitude — Learner development: Piaget and Vygotsky

Stages of cognitive development and the role of social interaction.

2 min readUpdated 8 Oct 2026

Overview

Teachers need to know how children think at different ages. Piaget and Vygotsky offer two of the most tested theories.

Key concepts

  • Piaget’s stages: sensorimotor (0–2), pre-operational (2–7), concrete operational (7–11), formal operational (11+).
  • Vygotsky: learning is social. The Zone of Proximal Development is what a child can do with help but not yet alone.
  • Scaffolding: temporary support that is removed as the learner becomes independent.

Important points

  • Concrete operational children understand conservation and logic about real objects.
  • Abstract and hypothetical reasoning appears in the formal operational stage.

Quick revision

Piaget = stages, individual construction. Vygotsky = social learning, ZPD, scaffolding.
