Globalisation and social change

Effects of globalisation on Indian society.

Sociology5 questions

The essentials

Globalisation refers to the growing interconnection of the world through flows of goods, capital, people, information and culture. It has several dimensions. Economic globalisation includes freer trade, foreign investment, transnational corporations and outsourcing. Political globalisation includes international organisations and agreements, such as the World Trade Organization, and the spread of ideas about rights and governance. Cultural globalisation includes the worldwide circulation of films, music, food and lifestyles, made faster by electronic communication.

In India, globalisation is closely linked with the liberalisation that began in 1991. It created new jobs in information technology, business process outsourcing and call centres, and expanded consumer choice. At the same time, it exposed many groups to new competition. Small producers, artisans, handloom weavers and some farmers faced cheaper imports or volatile world prices, and many jobs became insecure.

Sociologists debate cultural effects. Some fear homogenisation, in which local cultures are replaced by a global (often Western) culture. Others point to glocalisation, the mixing of global and local, where global companies adapt products to local tastes, for example by offering local-language programming or regional menu items, and local cultures absorb global elements in their own way. New forms of identity and consumption have emerged, especially among urban youth.

Key points

  • Globalisation is economic, political and cultural.
  • Benefits are unequal: some regions and groups gain, others lose.
  • Glocalisation: global products adapted to local cultures.
  • Outsourcing has created new kinds of work, such as night shifts in call centres.

Exam tips

For evaluation questions, mention both gains (jobs, choice, communication) and losses (insecurity, inequality, cultural pressure).

Common mistakes

Do not describe globalisation as only economic.
