What a précis is

A précis is a short, clear summary of a passage that keeps its main ideas and the author’s tone, usually about one-third of the original length, written in your own words.

Steps

• Read the passage and find its central idea.
• Note the key points; drop examples, repetitions and decoration.
• Write in your own words, in the third person, with a suitable title.
