Karaka and upapada vibhakti (कारक-उपपदविभक्तिः)
Case relations and the cases used with specific words.
The essentials
कारकम् is the relation of a noun to the action (क्रिया) in a sentence. "क्रियान्वयि कारकम्" — whatever is directly connected with the verb is a kāraka. There are six kārakas; षष्ठी (सम्बन्ध) is a case but not a kāraka, because it links a noun to another noun. Apart from kāraka rules, some words (उपपद) always demand a fixed case for the word connected with them — this is उपपदविभक्तिः.

Exam tips
- Find the verb first, then ask "who? what? with what? for whom? from where? where?"
- Learn उपपद words in sets by vibhakti; questions usually give a blank before such a word.
Common mistakes
- Using षष्ठी with नमः (गणेशस्य नमः ✗); the correct form is गणेशाय नमः.
