Krit and taddhita suffixes.

Sanskrit5 questions

The essentials

A प्रत्ययः is a suffix added after a root (धातु) or a word (प्रातिपदिक) to make a new word. Suffixes added to verb roots are कृत् प्रत्ययाः and the words formed are called कृदन्त. Suffixes added to nouns are तद्धित प्रत्ययाः. Suffixes that make feminine forms (टाप्, ङीप्) are स्त्रीप्रत्ययाः.

Key points

  • क्त्वा (having done): पठ् → पठित्वा, गम् → गत्वा, कृ → कृत्वा, दृश् → दृष्ट्वा. Used when the root has NO upasarga.
  • ल्यप् replaces क्त्वा when the root has an upasarga: आ + गम् → आगत्य, वि + ज्ञा → विज्ञाय, प्र + दा → प्रदाय, सम् + पूज् → सम्पूज्य.
  • तुमुन् (to do, purpose): पठितुम्, गन्तुम्, द्रष्टुम्, कर्तुम्.
  • क्त (past participle, mostly passive): गतः, पठितः, कृतः; क्तवतु (active past): गतवान्, पठितवान्, कृतवती (f.).
  • शतृ (present participle, parasmaipada roots): पठन्, गच्छन्; शानच् (ātmanepada roots): सेवमानः, वर्धमानः, लभमानः.
  • तव्यत्, अनीयर् (should be done): कर्तव्यम्, पठनीयम्, करणीयम्.
  • ण्वुल्, तृच् (doer): पाठकः, गायकः; कर्ता (कृ + तृच्), नेता.
  • क्तिन् (abstract feminine noun): गतिः, मतिः, कृतिः.
  • तद्धित — मतुप् (possessing): बुद्धिमान्, श्रीमान्; after अ/आ endings it becomes वत्: धनवान्, विद्यावान्. इन्: गुणी, धनी. ठक् (with vṛddhi of first vowel): धर्म → धार्मिकः, समाज → सामाजिकः, इतिहास → ऐतिहासिकः. त्व (neuter) and तल् (feminine) make abstract nouns: लघुत्वम्, लघुता. तरप्/तमप्: लघुतरः, लघुतमः. ईयसुन्/इष्ठन्: गरीयान्, गरिष्ठः.
  • स्त्रीप्रत्यय: टाप् — अज → अजा, बाल → बाला; ङीप् — कुमार → कुमारी, नद → नदी.

Exam tips

  • Before choosing क्त्वा or ल्यप्, check for an upasarga.
  • Remember that शतृ goes with parasmaipada roots and शानच् with ātmanepada roots.

Common mistakes

  • Writing आगत्वा instead of आगत्य.
  • Thinking पठितवान् is passive; it is क्तवतु, which is active (कर्तरि).
