The essentials
(Sandhi) means the change that happens when two sounds come very close together It is of three kinds: स्वरसन्धिः (vowel + vowel), व्यञ्जनसन्धिः (consonant + consonant or vowel), and विसर्गसन्धिः (visarga + vowel or consonant). Splitting a joined word back into its parts is called सन्धिविच्छेदः.
Key points
- पूर्वरूप: ए/ओ at word-end + अ, the अ merges (ऽ) — वने + अपि = वनेऽपि.
- विसर्ग: अः + soft consonant or अ → ओ — मनः + रथः = मनोरथः, बालः + अयम् = बालोऽयम्; विसर्ग → स्/श् before त्/च् — नमः + ते = नमस्ते, निः + चलः = निश्चलः; इः/उः → र् before a soft sound — निः + धनः = निर्धनः, दुः + आत्मा = दुरात्मा; र् + र् → first र् drops, vowel lengthens — निः + रोगः = नीरोगः; अः + any vowel other than अ → visarga drops — रामः + इच्छति = राम इच्छति.
Exam tips
- First identify the last sound of the first word and the first sound of the second word; the rule follows from that pair.
- In अयादि the first part ends in ए/ऐ/ओ/औ; in यण् it ends in इ/उ/ऋ — do not mix them.
Common mistakes
- Writing मनःरथः or मनरथः instead of मनोरथः.
- Calling देवेन्द्रः a दीर्घ sandhi; it is गुण, because अ + इ gives ए.
